PlayStation VR2 Price Slashed

Share the Story:

Sony have dramatically slashed the price of their excellent PSVR2 headset, at least in the UK, taking nearly £200 of the original £529 launch price only a year ago. This now takes the basic pack, that comes with sense motion controllers and Head Mounted High Definition Display (HMD) for a mere £349 from Amazon and Curry’s among others. Bringing it almost £100 below the MetaQuest 3 range of headsets and inline with the original PSVR launch price.

We covered the second generation launch last year with our in-depth review and its pioneering technical elements that made it a stand-out leader in the contested VR space. This has not changed in the last 18 months, and even now it delivers some of the best quality visuals, with its dual OLED display delivering 4K images (2000 x 2040 per eye), inside out tracking, eye tracking, foveated rendering, headset vibration, “see-through” augmented reality display and a wealth of titles that take you back to the excitement of the early arcade, home computers and console days.

A big reason for the price cut is likely related to the upcoming PC support that is ready to land in August via a new Application on Steam and a USB adapter for the headset. The PlayStation VR2 PC adapter will retail for £49.99/$59.99 and should go on sale around August 7th to expand the headsets usage with the plethora of Steam VR titles. I discussed this in my review at the time, with the goal to enable both PS5 and PC users to buy a single headset that allows a wider selection of VR games to shine whilst increasing sales of the hardware. The details on how the PC integration will work have not been shared in-depth, but earlier this year on the PlayStation Blog, an article from the team was shared that gave us an idea of the areas and focus this will take. Obviously, the ongoing PS5 to PC ports from PlayStation have seen some huge success for Sony, with Spider-Man 1, 2 and Miles Morales being a big hit. Day’s Gone, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Ghost of Tsushima and the huge multi-player hit, Helldivers 2. With no compatible VR headset on the PC though, this has left some big exclusives off the table, until now.

The impressive launch title, Horizon: Call of the Mountain, is one that did a great deal to show of both the visual quality and physical immersion the PSVR2 delivers. This, alongside other, currently, PSVR2 exclusive VR titles in Gran Turismo 7and its magnificent VR race mode can join that list of potential console to PC ports to support the sales of the headset. Meaning current PC owners could snap up the PSVR2 headset to start their VR journey or replace a current one with a single solution. And if they happen to be dual PS5 and PC owner, this could be enough to take the plunge into some excellent Virtual Reality gaming with a single solution for both formats, so long as your PC hits the minimum spec requirements.

If you are in the market for a taste of Virtual reality or have not yet been bitten by the VR bug. Which ever side of the fence you sit here, the cost reduction is an obvious aim to boost sales, increase revenue and overall expand the market to enable more developers to make games and allow Sony to gain a larger share of the VR space across PC and console, of which they are currently single custodians of. And come August we may be able to finally play Half-Life: Alyx on the PSVR2….kind of.
