Technically a Success?
The latest Capcom juggernaut, Monster Hunter Wilds, launched over the past February weekend, and despite a vast swath of technical issues we covered in our preview (see video below) and upcoming full review. This seems to not matter a jot, as the game now holds the record of the fastest selling title in the company’s history. Over 8 million units and counting over a 3 day period is a feat that will bring more than just attention. The popularity of the series has never been in question ever since it debut on the PlayStation 2 in 2004.
Since then the series has had periods of exclusivity between Sony and Nintendo, before going multi-platform -of sorts- in 2007 with a Windows release of Monster Hunter Frontier and then later on the OG Xbox . But it really became the mainstream monster with 2018s Monster Hunter:World. Landing on PS4, Xbox One, PC it managed to break into the 20+ million mark across the gaming landscape. See our preview of the game back at launch, which also had its fair share of technical challenges.
In the end, the sales will send a message across the industry that you can continue to release games in a “troubled” technical condition, and not be met with disdain and scorn as would be expected. Instead, rapturous applause and record break sales. Which is not the message or reward I think reflects the launch condition of the game across most platforms.
