The Witcher 3 Gets a New Expansion

Geralt Rides again

You cannot keep a good Witcher down, and CD Projekt Red continue to fund his existence. Even though the latest Witcher 4 due in a few years is still deep in development, powered by Unreal Engine 5. They see a market for some more DLC, some 12 years (when it launches) after the seminal final chapter of Geralt’s adventure launched on last generation consoles. Song’s of the Past is the 3rd DLC, and brings with it an increase in baseline Specs on PC and Consoles a like. The game will launch next year (2027) and is exclusive to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, sorry Nintendo Switch 2 owners. It will return Geralt to the lead saddle and right now we have little information on just what the adventure will entail.

Even thought the game will be published by the Polish Gaming studio, it will be created by Ex-CDP developers. Many left after the Witcher 3 was shipped, and created their own studios, Fool’s Theory, and could not leave the enhancing hero behind. The team made one of the greatest games of last generation, and one of the greatest RPG’s of all time. A game I covered over 25 times in various videos, updates, enhancements and DLC reviews over the years. And I will be very, ,very excited to return to a new tale. One aspect of the new baseline is that the Ray Tracing updates added many years ago can not be base-lined and possibly enhanced further on PS5 and Series X, with the PS5 Pro and PC (specifically Nvidia RTX50 series) can go even further. This could see some glorious visual, even for such an old game and engine, but also show us what we are missing in the studios shift to Unreal Engine tech rather than their own Proprietary Red Engine.

The game is likely a funding model proposed by the independent developers to CDP, which will be a win win. The new Studio, who are also making the Witcher remake, is gaining a revenue and experiencer set from the old game and engine. Which will be a quicker creation than the UE5 powered remake, but also likely a bigger seller with some 60 million copies sold of the game. Just 10% attach rate would be 6+ million sales, not a bad 2 years work for both Fool’s Theory and CD Projekt Red. Whilst we wait for the next adventure from our horny, sword wielding slayer.
