Faster, better, more expensive!

The Sony PlayStation 5 family of consoles are about to go up in price once again. As announced over on the PlayStation Blog late last week, almost all regions and models will see significant increases in their respective MSRP.  As the Internet Technology eco-system continues to implode (or explode depending on your position) the cost of all technology in the supply chain or coming just continues to rise as the water boils. This is the second time Sony have increased the price of the PS5 since it’s launch back in November 2020 which launched with 2 models across UK/Europe and US markets.

  • PS5 Disc Model – £449.99/€/$499.99
  • PS5 Digital Model – £359.99/€/$399.99

And it remained at this prices for around 5 years, when just under a year ago, in April 2025, Sony bumped the price by approx £70/€100 to £429.99/€499.99  on the most popular model, Digital Model. This was effective across Europeon/Asian/Middle East/Australia and New Zealand markets and not US as that is their single biggest market. This would have been to mitigate the then incoming Tarrifs on US imports and subsidised by the NON-US markets. This time however every market is seeing an big increase, and this is not just on the base PS5, PS5 Slim models.

Keep it in the Family

This latest increase is due to “continued pressured in the Global Economic Landscape” effectibly, AI, Gaming Bubble, DataCentres, War and tarrifs. And the TLDR version is everything now costs more to make, ship, store and sell and also Sony have only a single console competitor now in Nintendo. With Xbox all but dead in the console gaming business as a hardware player, this is another factor of the lack of competition, a captive market. All these things combine in that we are seeing around 20% increases on the current MSRP for every piece of PlayStation hardware, and this is adding well over £150/$180/€180 to some models and this includes the just over 1 year old PS5 Pro and the PlayStation Portal.

This increase is not as simple as it seems above though, as currently you can pick up a PS5 Pro for far less than the “Old” MSRP of £699.99. Argos and Currys in the UK for example have stock as of this articles publish available for £60 under that at £639.99 and the digital for £399.99 which is inbetween the launch price and increase from April 2025. As we saw with the GPU market, this means that prices have increased since the launch period and currently show no signs of the old days of decreasing as manafacture process, BoM got cheaper as the device aged and technology moved forward. Instead we are in a rare position on increases asset value if you picked up a launch model you may actually be able to sell it at more that you purchased it for, something very strange but appropropriate for the current consumer electronics world.

So, if you are on the fence for grabbing a brand new PS5, or upgrading to the far more powerful PS5 Pro that enhances all your games, performance and image quality, then maybe now is the best time to jump in. As the current stock in the supply chain is likely to sell out fast, and the newer, SKU’s that replace them are only going to be even more expensive for the same quality. And I cannot believe after almost 6 years on the market, the PS5 is now costing up to 50% more than when it launched. So Grab em while they ‘R’ Hot.
