Hands On, literally!
Quietly and without any fanfare, something becoming increasingly more common of Sony of late, the PSVR2 HMD got a huge update at the Siggraph Aisia 2024 event this week. Based on the video shared on X HERE, the new update now offers a full controller free experience in your games. The demo shown looked a very basic example that will be easy for attendees to try and intuitive to use quickly. The Siggraph website does have a small mention buried within the contents highlighting this new update for the PSVR2 headset is now available for all developers to use in the latest SDK. The solution does not require any additional hardware and simply requires your hands to be in view of the headset cameras for tracking.
The details on the specifics are thin on the ground, but the info does state the headset tracks your hands and fingers at a fast 60Hz or 60FPS for a low latency response during play. The options this offers to widen both the style of games but also the player base of VR is exciting to see. Many games such as the highly popular Beat Saber, amongst others, would benefit from this unshackled style of play. Many types of games could leverage this new input method from Punch-out style boxing games, horror games, puzzlers and many more. The best thing is, the choice would support both PS5/PS5 Pro and PC players alike. As covered in our PSVR2 review and later PC support added video, the headset still offers one of the best VR experiences going. With it offering a unique single solution for console and PC VR gaming. I look forward to seeming more on this and going “hand on” as soon as possible.
